This violin was restored in 1991 and has been well kept in excellent playing condition except that the bow needs to be re-haired and the sound post repositioned as it is currently rattling around the interior of the instrument.1991 Violin Appraisal:
This Violin made by David Christian Havemann, Organist and Violin Macher in Klingenthal 1747. Havemann was considered one of the better violin makers of his time, and this is a specimen of his work influenced by the Saxon School. There are several violins by this maker listed in the Violin Makers Identification and Price Guide by Roy Ehrhardt, Heart of American Press of Kansas City, Missouri, 1978.
This violin has a one piece flamed maple back with matching ribs, the neck and scroll are also of flamed maple with the scroll grafted on. Top is of very close grained spruce, ebony pegs, tailpiece and chin rest. Instrument has been restored to excellent playing condition and [in the opinion of the appraiser] is comparable in condition and price as those listed in the above publication.
