Viola Location: Hamilton, North Island, New Zealand
Musical Instrument Description: Viola for sale - Graeme Thatcher (No.47) [SOLD - California, USA]
New Instrument
The back is made from a one piece very old, unique, rare and exquisite New Zealand native mangeao. It has an unusual vertical grain and underlying mottled effect. Across the centre of the upper bout is a blended line of miniature immature knots forming, which flows over the edge in a continuous direction across the rib.
One third of the distance across the back from the right hand edge is a full length vertical blending of the same timber texture, but of a differing colour shading. The left hand two thirds is a reddish brown while the right hand one third is more golden brown. The effect changes with the slightest movement. The ribs and scroll are of matching wood.
The belly is made from two piece Swiss Pine, very hard and old with an even medium grain.
The upper nut and lower saddle have both been made from white bone and polished.
The chin rest is made from mangeao, with a natural water stain.
Natural golden brown hues with clear oil varnish and superb transparency.
This instrument is fitted with D'Addario - Helicore C, G, and D strings and a Jargar A string.
A superb viola with a very deep rich resonant, warm velvet sound. It has excellent projection, harmonics and instant response. Evenly balanced and easy to play.
A Professional instrument for a demanding player.
