Description for Viola - David Hermann 16" Viola:
Viola Description
It is a instrument that has a dark, warm, robust tone. The two piece back is pinned at the top and at the bottom. Inside the viola there is a label reads:
David Hermann 2000
I've owned several violas over the years, but this is by far the best one I've ever had. If this viola was in a fancy shop, it would sell for a few several thousand dollars, so this is an opportunity for someone to get a genuine bargain. Along with this viola, is a 15-16 lightweight oblong Apsum viola case that is in great condition.
Quality of Workmanship & Condition
This viola is hand carved, and the detail is astounding. The ff holes are fluted and cut very precisely. The scroll is deeply, and delicately carved, and is fully undercut. The edges are executed with great skill, and are fluted nicely. The purfling is very neatly inlaid, with nice bee sting corners. The arching is medium on the front and back. The inside is fully lined with blocks in all of the corners, and the the work is very smooth and clean. The back is carved from two matched pieces of beautiful, highly figured tiger maple. It is pinned at the top and bottom, and there is a crown of ebony that adorns the button. The two piece spruce table is of fine grain in the center that widens slightly toward the edges, and is very nicely graduated. The viola is very healthy for its age. There were no repairs done. The viola is properly set up with high quality boxwood fittings. I adjusted the soundpost, high quality, fancy cut, French bridge. I also installed a brand new set of medium tension, Pirastro Obligato strings.
This is a 4/4 (16 inch) Viola. The overall length of the viola is 26 3/4 inches. The length of the back, excluding the button, is 16 inches. The bottom bout is 7 3/4 inches wide, and the top bout is 9 3/4 inches wide. This is a 4/4 (16 inch) viola.
Description of the Tone
The clear ringing overtones give the appearance of natural reverb. It is extremely strong, warm and mature with a deep dark character. The tone is velvety smooth and even across the strings. It has excellent volume, and projects remarkably. It is well suited for an advancing student, or for any professional musician. The viola is easy to play in all the registers. The G & D are clear and extremely smooth. The treble is silvery sweet and singing. The viola has great sustain, and robust, ringing overtones it produces are very rich and full. There are several layers of color to be explored, for the experienced player. When bowed lightly the viola has a whispering, soulful quality. When bowed more aggressively, it will rise up and sing with a thundering voice that will captivate and amaze any audience. There is a full range of dynamics available that originate from the well rounded core and extend to the very edge of a vast spectrum. The bow response is wonderful, and the viola is very pleasant under the ear, which makes it an absolute joy to play.
