This tuba has a great York sound. It can produce a huge sound. The intonation is good but not perfect. This a great playing tuba! This tuba was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The serial number is 110717. It was made in 1935. It has a .730 inch bore. The leadpipe is not directly soldered to the bell, but to a brace. This is a 5/4 (some say 4/4) size tuba. The tuba weighs about 25 pounds. There is a bell case in very good condition. There are many guards against dents on the tuba.
This is a very reliable, very high quality instrument that will last many lifetimes if properly cared for. This is a great tuba for the professional tubist.
There are 4 front action pistons valves. The valves are in near mint condition and look new! They work BETTER than the valves on many new horns. The plating is very good. They are very clean. The caps are easily removed. They ALL operate very smoothly, quickly, quietly and have good compression. The valves work very well.
There are 7 tuning slides; 2 first valve, 1 second valve, 2 third valve, 1 fourth, and 1 main slide. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd valves slides are on the top. All of the slides move smoothly. The top 3rd valve slide is 9 inches so it can help out the low register a lot, but it is hard to move it quickly.
The bell is about 22 inches across. It is a removable recording bell. I do not have an upright bell for it. The bell is has a very large engraving and is engraved the words:
York
Grand Rapids
Michigan
USA
It has a gold colored lacquered brass finish with about 90% of the lacquer still intact. The interior seems clean and does not have an odor. In some places the lacquer is flaking off. It has very few scratches and also very few dings and dents but nothing too big. The worst dents 1 on a dent rib on the bell and 2 on the lower 3rd valve slides. The braces are all solid, intact, and complete. There has been a inch sized dent removed in the second largest top branch. There are no signs of repairs involving soldering since it left the factory.
I will would accept a 4 valve comp. euph, good Eb, F, or CC as a partial trade or maybe full trade for a good CC tuba.
