Arnold Dolmetsch 1923 Octave Virginal; mixed media - English Walnut case; closed measurements: 31" x 30" x19 3/8"; signed on fascia above keyboard: ARNOLD DOLMETSCH ANNO CM XXIII. Condition - work/excellent. Unbolts from walnut pedestal-style four-legged support; brass hinges on single-fold top and rear lid; soudning board hand painted in flower pattern by Mrs. Dolmetsch; ivory and ebony keys, with dark ivory, perhaps stained; pitched one octave higher than standard; signed on the sounding board suppport at top left front "Rebuilt John Challis, Detroit, Michigan 1949"; signed on top right front "repair 1977 Alan Austin; all of the original structure remains intact; repairs/replacement made only to strings and fret. John Challis purchased this instrument from Arnold Dolmetsch. The Challis family has confirmed this information.
