Based on late 16th century Italian designed double strung harps, the double strung gothic features a carved hardwood soundboard with a rectangular section box. Depending on timber availability and size, the backs of the soundbox will either be built up or carved from the solid. The harp can be fitted with either five or seven chromatic notes, which swap sides half way down the instrument. Note that this style of harp is not freestanding.
