This classical guitar was made in 2010 by Jose Luis Diaz, in Paracho, Mexico, the unique guitar-making town. An annual competition is held there for the best hand-made guitars, in which J-L. Diaz has received at least 8 prizes. He has been constructing guitars for over 50 years.
This guitar has some novel features, which J-L. Diaz designed after having the opportunity to hear and to examine John Williams' Greg Smallman guitar. John Williams gave a concert in Paracho in 2006. His visit, the guitar makers, guitarists, and the annual fiesta are featured in the DVD "The Guitar is their Song."
This Diaz guitar is built with the back and the sides considerably thicker than traditional designs, though his construction differs from the Australian guitars. The timber is cocobolo, and the back is made by hollowing out the timber to produce a strong back which does not require cross-struts. The guitar weighs 1.7 Kg. Diaz has made only a few guitars in this way. The Canadian cedar top is of standard thickness; Diaz did not want to construct an ultra-thin top which could be fragile. The fingerboard is made of ciricote and the scale length is 65 cm. The guitar has Schaller tuning machines. Body air resonance (hum into the soundhole) is F-sharp. The finish is a thin semi-matt spray varnish; the neck is smoother. The guitar is in excellent condition with no scratches etc.
